<p style="margin:0cm 0cm 10pt"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height:115%"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif">Almost forty years ago I was suffering from burnout from my first job of teaching and wanted to travel by myself in Mexico with my first salary savings. There I met another German woman with the same intention from the same situation, except working as a doctor. We decided to hike together to El Arcotete in San Cristobal de las Casas (one of the poorest areas in Mexico where indigenes have suffered from the worst consequences of colonialism) and afterwards separate for our individual routes.</span></span></span><br /><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height:115%"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif">At El Arcotete we met two young local men who were friendly to us and we reacted in the same manner. On our way back, in the middle of nowhere, in a lonesome forest they attacked us, threatened us with our own knives, attempted rape and disappeared with our money. </span></span></span><br /><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height:115%"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif">We remained together, went to a police station, where policemen surrounded us closely and grinningly asked us to tell details of the rape. We went to the German consul in Merida, a Mexican businessman who invited us for dinner and then made remarks that made us flee his home. We travelled to Isla Mujeres (which at that time was an insider tip and not yet a tourist hub), told our stories to a woman lying beside us on the beach. “You are brave, you are talking about it, it also happened to me, at home”… It helped us all to survive the sexual violence we had experienced.</span></span></span><br /><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height:115%"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif">It was my travelling companion who eventually dropped the remark, “Someone told me about an organisation which you can join to visit other members around the world. All have to pass an interview and thus are accredited as trustworthy. You can meet locals – without having to worry about anything dangerous. SERVAS also holds an observation position with the UN, it is about making peace through meeting. ”</span></span></span></p>

<p>My backpack is ready. Only what is absolutely necessary is inside. I like to travel “light”, with a very few things with me, like ancient nomads or Alpine explorers. I love to travel alone. I love to travel on foot and by bicycle. I feel free, full of adrenaline, independent. Really surrounded by creation... the blue sky, the quiet sea, the strong wind and sometimes the rain... but also people all around me. Now I am leaving for a couple of weeks for a short holiday. The trip will lead me to Oporto, in Portugal, for the first time, and then, on foot, for an adventurous walk along the Douro river, the ocean coast and woody paths... direction north, toward Finisterre. I am travelling alone, with no GPS, in a country I don’t know. Several thoughts in my mind. Shall I reach my goal? Shall I miss my home, my family, my friends? Shall I be up to the situation... facing unknown people, unexpected events and bad weather? Shall I handle the anxiety of this trip that’s not so well-organised? But I have a strong feeling inside. I am part of an international network, Servas, which can make you feel at home everywhere you are. In Oporto somebody is waiting for me, by coincidence another “single” woman, Teresa, whom I am meeting for the first time. She will freely share with me her time, her stories, her feelings. Servas is a dream! Servas is a revolutionary dream of a new lifestyle based on welcoming, on “taking care”, on “feeling part of a single humanity”, with a unique project to build a new world of peace and justice.</p>

<p style="margin:0cm 0cm 10pt"><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height:115%"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif">Il y a près de quarante ans, je souffrais d'épuisement professionnel dans mon premier emploi d'enseignante et je voulais voyager seule au Mexique avec mes premières économies de salaire. Là, j'ai rencontré une autre femme allemande avec la même intention et la même situation, sauf en tant que médecin. Nous avons décidé de marcher ensemble jusqu'à El Arcotete à San Cristobal de las Casas (l'une des régions les plus pauvres du Mexique où les indigènes ont souffert des pires conséquences du colonialisme) et ensuite de nous séparer pour suivre nos itinéraires individuels.<br />
A El Arcotete, nous avons rencontré deux jeunes gens du coin qui se sont montrés sympathiques envers nous et nous avons réagi de la même manière. Sur le chemin du retour, au milieu de nulle part, dans une forêt isolée, ils nous ont attaquées, menacées avec nos propres couteaux, tenté de nous violer et ont disparu avec notre argent.</span></span></span><br /><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height:115%"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif">Nous sommes restées ensemble, nous sommes allées à un poste de police, où des policiers nous ont encerclées de près et nous ont demandé en souriant de donner des détails sur le viol. Nous sommes allées chez le consul allemand à Mérida, un homme d'affaires mexicain qui nous a invitées à dîner et a ensuite fait des remarques qui nous ont fait fuir son domicile. Nous nous sommes rendues à Isla Mujeres (qui à l'époque était un conseil d'initié et pas encore un centre touristique), où nous avons raconté nos histoires à une femme allongée à côté de nous sur la plage. "Vous êtes courageuses, vous en parlez, cela m'est aussi arrivé, à la maison"… Cela nous a toutes aidées à survivre aux violences sexuelles que nous avions vécues.<br />
C'est ma compagne de voyage qui a finalement fait cette remarque: "Quelqu'un m'a parlé d'une organisation à laquelle vous pouvez adhérer pour rendre visite à d'autres membres à travers le monde. Toutes les personnes doivent passer un entretien et sont donc accréditées comme dignes de confiance. Vous pouvez rencontrer des hôtes locaux - sans avoir à craindre quelque danger que ce soit. SERVAS occupe également un poste d'observation auprès de l'ONU, il s'agit de faire la paix par des rencontres. "</span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="line-height:115%"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif">Depuis trente-cinq ans maintenant, je voyage en toute sécurité en tant que femme seule - avec SERVAS.</span></span></span></p>

<p>Mon sac à dos est prêt. Seulement ce qui est absolument nécessaire est à l'intérieur. J'aime voyager «légère», avec très peu de choses , comme les anciens nomades ou les explorateurs alpins. J'adore voyager seule. J'adore voyager à pied et à vélo. Je me sens libre, pleine d'adrénaline, indépendante. Vraiment entourée de création ... le ciel bleu, la mer calme, le vent fort et parfois la pluie ... mais aussi les gens tout autour de moi. Maintenant, je pars pour quelques semaines pour de courtes vacances.<br />
Le voyage me conduira à Porto, au Portugal, pour la première fois, puis, à pied, pour une promenade aventureuse le long du fleuve Douro, de la côte océanique et des sentiers boisés ... direction nord, direction Finisterre. Je voyage seule, sans GPS, dans un pays que je ne connais pas. Plusieurs pensées dans mon esprit. Est-ce que j'irai atteindre mon objectif? Est-ce que j'irai manquer ma maison, ma famille, mes amis? Suis-je à la hauteur de la situation ... face à des inconnus, des événements imprévus et du mauvais temps? Comment gérer l'angoisse de ce voyage qui n'est pas si bien organisé? Mais j'ai un fort sentiment à l'intérieur. Je fais partie d'un réseau international, Servas, qui peut vous faire sentir chez vous, où que vous soyez.<br />
A Porto, quelqu'un m'attend, par hasard une autre femme «célibataire», Teresa, que je rencontre pour la première fois. Elle partagera librement avec moi son temps, ses histoires, ses sentiments.<br />
Servas est un rêve!<br />
Servas est un rêve révolutionnaire d'un nouveau style de vie basé sur l'accueil, le «prendre soin», le «sentiment d'appartenir à une seule humanité», avec un projet unique pour construire un nouveau monde de paix et de justice.</p>
